MTG Card Grading Guide: When to Grade, Where to Submit, and How to Calculate ROI
Professional grading can multiply a Magic: The Gathering card's value by 2-10x — or it can cost you $30+ for a card that comes back as a 7. Knowing when to grade and where to submit is the difference between profit and wasted money.
This guide covers everything you need to know about grading MTG cards in 2026, including how to use Card Price Oracle's AI pre-grading to predict your grade before you spend a dime.
Should You Grade Your Card?
Not every card is worth grading. The general rule:
Grade a card if the graded value minus grading cost is significantly more than the raw value.
The Grading ROI Formula
ROI = (Expected Graded Value - Grading Cost - Raw Value) / Raw Value × 100%
ROI = (Expected Graded Value - Grading Cost - Raw Value) / Raw Value × 100%
Example: A raw Near Mint Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer is worth $60. A PSA 10 is worth $180. Grading costs $30.
ROI = ($180 - $30 - $60) / $60 × 100% = 150% ROI ✅ Worth grading.
Counter-example: A raw NM Lightning Bolt (Revised) is worth $3. A PSA 10 is worth $15. Grading costs $30.
ROI = ($15 - $30 - $3) / $3 × 100% = -600% ROI ❌ Not worth grading.
Quick Decision Framework
| Raw Card Value | Grade Needed for Profit | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Under $10 | PSA 10 only | Usually not worth it |
| $10-50 | PSA 9+ | Grade if condition is excellent |
| $50-200 | PSA 8+ | Usually worth grading |
| $200+ | PSA 7+ | Almost always worth grading |
| $1,000+ | Any grade | Grade for authentication alone |
